FAQS and The Best Acne Products

I am an identical twin and I have acne but my sister doesn’t - weird or what? Can you explain why and what would be the best acne products for me?

Answering questions like this is always difficult. We can’t give you a reason why your twin doesn’t have acne, because the precise cause and triggers are not fully understood. However, studies of twins have helped to work out that some genetic inheritance is involved, as identical twins tend to produce similar amounts of the skin grease called sebum. This is not the case for non-identical twins.

You don’t say how old you are - it may be that your sister will go on to develop acne. She is certainly more likely to have acne than if she were not your twin.

I have been having problems with my skin for about two years. Can you tell me what the difference is between spots and acne? I think that to have acne you must have at least 20 spots but my mum thinks otherwise.

There is no real difference between spots and acne, assuming that the type of spots fits into the pattern we have described with blackheads, whiteheads, papules and pustules. What is most important is the effect the spots have on you and whether you have any of the more serious types of spot that might cause long-term scars. If you are upset by the appearance of your skin, it doesn’t really matter how many spots you have - you have a problem that is worth seeking the best acne treatments for.

If acne isn’t treated correctly, it can lead to really big issues further down the line. Pores that are unclean and blocked with dead skin cells result in acne. The clogs create ideal breeding grounds for bacteria. This causes skin irritation, which forms into sores, leading to acne. Generally, acne is caused by the oil, dirt, dead skin cells, and bacteria that clog to the skin pores. To the development of acne on the face other contributing factors are also linked. Improper personal hygiene, exposure to the sun, varying hormone levels and poor diet and lifestyle are contributing factors.

The use of topical products, which consist of different chemical and/or natural ingredients to destroy acne and it’s root causes, is the most common form of treatment. To help the skin produce healthy skin cells and stop the skin from developing possible future outbreaks these acne treatment products are formulated. If they are used correctly ingredients in these treatments are generally safe for the skin. Acne treatments can be gender-specific and cater to either men or women. They might all be somewhat different, but their ultimate goal is basically the same : cleaning, acne treatment, and acne prevention.
