Menopause Symptoms - Treatment Of Abnormal Menstrual Bleeding
The type of treatment depends on the cause of the abnormal bleeding and whether it is coming from the uterus or cervix.
Uterine Bleeding
Most of the time the cause of uterine bleeding (prolonged and irregular) is hormonal. In otherwise healthy perimenopausal women the natural hormone replacement treatment of choice is a slow-release progesterone coil called the IUS (intra-uterine system) or Mirena. This can be fitted by your doctor or after a D&C while under anesthetic. This lasts for at least three years, and has the added advantage of also acting as a contraceptive. A low-dose progesterone is delivered directly to the endometrium and prevents it from thickening. Periods become much lighter and may stop altogether. In the past, progesterone tablets have been tried to reduce and regulate the cycle, but these are less effective and more likely to cause unwanted side effects.
Starting natural hormone replacement therapy can help, and other drugs used to help the blood to clot more quickly, such as tranexamic acid, can be effective.
