Home Remedies for Acne - How to Use Tea Tree Oil and Green Tea

Acne can be treated in a variety of ways, some more effective than others, and many of us prefer natural cures for acne rather than stronger, chemical treatments. Here we explain how to use 2 of the most popular remedies for acne, tea tree oil and green tea.

Tea Tree Acne Remedies

Tea tree oil has been shown in many trials to be nearly as successful as benzoyl peroxide without many of the side effects. The active ingredient in tea tree oil is terpinen-4-ol which is an effective anti-microbial agent and is able to destroy the acne causing bacteria. Tea tree oil should never be placed undiluted directly on the skin. A solution of 5% oil is easily made and can be used until the skin becomes accustomed to it. The concentration can then be increased if needed. Nevertheless it should not be used at levels of more than 15%.

Green Tea

Scientific studies have revealed that epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), the active ingredient in green tea, is a very effective anti-inflammatory agent and anti-oxidant. Inflamed skin associated with acne has been treated successfully with green tea which can be as helpful as benzoyl peroxide. In a similar way to tea tree oil, green tea has a smaller amount of side effects than benzoyl peroxide and does not result in skin dryness. Acne treatments can be bought containing green tea, but it is very easy to make a treatment at home by soaking the leaves in hot water, then cooling and applying the infusion to the affected area.

In Conclusion

For mild to moderate acne these acne home remedies may be effective. Stick to the instructions very carefully and use for a month or more to see a significant improvement in your skin’s condition.
